A dental implant is an artificial fixture made of metal (titanium screw) that replaces the root of a missing tooth.  In fact, a dental implant is directly fitted into the jawbone in order to hold the crown or denture and support the natural tooth. It can be used to replace a single tooth, several teeth, or all of the teeth.

The dental implant was invented in 1952 by Per-Ingvar Brånemark; a Swedish physician and orthopedic surgeon who has been known as the father of modern dental implantology. It is a safe solution to restore function as well as esthetics and like natural teeth, will last for as long as you look after them well.

For making dental implants, different materials are used. A dental implant consists of a titanium screw replaces the root and an internal screw which is called an abutment. At first, the surgery will examine the health of your gums and the strength of your jawbone.

Types of Dentures

border

There are 3 different types of dentures: conventional, immediate, and overdenture.

    • Conventional. This is a full removable denture. In this method, first, all the remaining teeth will be removed and after the tissues have healed, the made dentures are placed in your mouth which may take several months.
    • Immediate. This is a removable denture. In this method, the dentures are inserted on the same day when the remaining teeth are removed. During a preliminary visit, your dentist will take measurements and make models of your jaw. After a couple of days, you may need to have the dentures relined or remade after your jaw has healed.
    • Overdenture. In this method, some of your natural teeth which are healthy can be saved to preserve your jawbone and provide stability and support for the denture. An overdenture fits over a small number of remaining natural teeth after they have been prepared by your dentist. Implants can serve the same function, too.

You may feel uncomfortable with new dentures for a few weeks until you become accustomed to them which is normal. The dentures may feel loose while the muscles of your cheek and tongue learn to keep them in place. You may also experience minor irritation or soreness for a couple of days. You may find that saliva flow temporarily increases. All these problems should go away when your mouth becomes accustomed to the dentures. After a denture is inserted, you need to have follow-up appointments with the dentist as the fit should be checked and adjusted.

Tooth Extraction
Tooth Extraction
      • Too badly damaged from dental trauma or tooth decay so it is impossible for the dentist to fix a tooth by crowns or filling or other dental treatments
      • If the infection is so severe that antibiotics or RCT do not cure it
      • Periodontal (gum) disease
      • Preparing for orthodontics (in case your teeth are too big for your mouth),
      • Having extra teeth
      • In case baby teeth have not fallen out on time

Extracting tooth performs by a dentist and oral surgeon (dentists with special training to perform surgery) under local anesthesia. In some instances, your dentist may use a strong general anesthetic. This will prevent pain throughout your body and make you sleep through the procedure.

Types of Tooth Extractions

border

There are 2 types of dental extractions including simple extraction and surgical extraction. A simple extraction is the removal of a tooth that is visible in your mouth and unbroken. It is also used when a tooth has straight roots, extends above the gum line, and is structurally sound enough to be loosened and extracted in one piece from above the gums.

A surgical extraction must be used in order to section the tooth into pieces or to make an incision in the soft tissue for a tooth removal. It is performed to remove an invisible tooth or impacted wisdom teeth, extensively damaged teeth that have little or no intact structure, or teeth that are contributing to overcrowding issues and cannot be removed through simple tooth extraction.
