Gastric sleeve also called vertical Sleeve gastrectomy is a popular surgical method in weight loss procedure. The surgeon removes most of your stomach and a long tube- like pouch will remain in which it can’t hold much food and as a result it produces less of the appetite-regulating hormone which decrease your desire to eat. So, you will lose a significant weight.  In this method, you stay at hospital shorter comparing to other methods. It is very important to remember that this is not a reversible method. This surgery is performed under general anesthesia.

Most sleeve gastrostomies are performed through laparoscopic method. The surgeon makes five or six small incisions in the abdomen and use a video camera (laparoscope) and long instruments that are placed through these small incisions.

In sleeve gastrectomy, 2/3rd of the left side of the stomach is removed via laparoscopic method by using endoscopic staplers. The left stomach has the shape of a hockey stick or sleeve with a capacity ranging between 60 -100 cc.

Sleeve Gastrectomy (Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy )

Since the outlet is small, food stays in the pouch longer and one also feels satiated for a longer time. In this method, the outlet valve and the nerves of the stomach remain intact.

Upon discharge from hospital, you will be given follow-up visits between 2-4 weeks. The next follow-up visits will be monthly for the first six months.

According to the studies, the sleeve gastrectomy is as effective as gastric bypass surgery in terms of weight loss and improvement or remission of diabetes specifically type 2 diabetes.
